Chippewa Bowhunters -- Club News

Please read the following message from our district representative to the Wisconsin Bowhunters Association, Bill Hermmann
Dear Chippewa Bowhunter members,
The reason for this email is to inform you of a Bill that has been introduced in the Wisconsin Legislature. The Bill, AB-384, is also known as the Lesser Weapon bill. This bill will protect the archery deer season by maintaining the current legal weapons allowed in the bow season while still allowing the current crossbow exemption for the handicapped and elderly over 65. While the bill preserves the current archery deer season it allows those folks that want to use a crossbow to do so during firearms seasons such as the gun deer, Bear, Turkey, Small game, etc so it’s a win-win for those concerned with crossbow usage. If this bill becomes law, everybody (regardless of age or ability) will be allowed to use a crossbow to hunt deer (during the various gun deer seasons, Bear, Turkey, Small game, Predators, etc but will only allow crossbow usage in the bow season for the elderly and handicapped. Beyond that, the bill goes so far as to include the following text:
“If the department establishes an open season for hunting deer, elk, small game, wild turkey, or bear with a bow and arrow but not with a firearm, the department may not open that season for hunting with a crossbow except by a person who has attained the age of 65 or by a person who is authorized to hunt with a crossbow by a handicapped permit”
Here is where your help is needed to ensure this bill becomes a law. The hearing is scheduled in Madison on January 18th, 2012 at 9:00 A.M. before the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources. Its imperative that you voice your support via email or phone to the lawmakers who will decide the fate of this bill. To make your opinion known to your representative please use the WI Legislative Hotline 1-800 862 9472 or http://legis.wisconsin.gov/w3asp/waml/waml.aspx to find out who your legislators are so you can contact their office directly.
Please take some time in the next few days to contact your state representatives. Be respectful and brief but make sure to urge them to support the bill. This is your chance to preserve and protect the archery deer season. Please don’t let it pass by without action on your part. .
I can’t stress enough the importance of contacting your legislators to urge them to support this bill. The archery deer season is certainly worth a few minutes to make a phone call or send an email to your elected officials.
Thanks for your time.
